Authenticating a modern grail: what a specialist looks for

There is no single test that authenticates a watch. A sound conclusion is built from many small observations, taken together, by someone who has handled a great number of the reference in question. That is why a serious piece is always inspected in the hand rather than judged from photographs alone.

Several things are examined. The case: its proportions, the finishing of brushed and polished surfaces, the sharpness of hallmarks and engravings, and whether the piece has been over-polished. The dial: the printing, the application of indices, the luminous material, and the fine details that are difficult to reproduce faithfully. The movement: whether the calibre is correct for the reference and period, and whether its finishing and markings are as they should be. The serial and reference numbers, and their consistency across case, papers and any service records. And the documentation and provenance, where a watch has been, and whether its history holds together.

For modern references, additional checks apply: bracelet and clasp details, the correct generation of a movement within a long-running family, and the specifics that distinguish one production period from another. None of this is exotic. It is careful, patient work, and there is no substitute for experience with the specific model.

Where they are available, original papers, service records and period documentation are reviewed alongside the watch. For added assurance, independent authentication or a manufacturer inspection can be arranged before settlement on request.
