Box, papers and 'full set': what completeness really means

Ask an experienced collector what separates two otherwise identical watches and the answer often has little to do with the watch itself. It is the paperwork. "Full set" is shorthand for a watch that arrives as it originally left the boutique: the watch, its box, and the accompanying documentation, warranty card or certificate, booklets, and any additional links, tags or accessories supplied when new.

Why does completeness matter so much? Partly it is reassurance: original papers help establish that a watch is what it claims to be and when it was sold. Partly it is desirability, for the most sought-after references, a full set is materially more appealing than a watch alone, and the market has long rewarded originality. And partly it is simply the collector's instinct for wholeness; a grail reference feels complete when its history is intact.

The vocabulary is worth knowing. "Watch only" means exactly that, no box, no papers. "Box and papers" indicates the original packaging and documentation are present. "Full set" goes further, implying everything supplied at the point of sale. "Unworn" describes a watch that has never been used, though it does not by itself guarantee papers. Service history is separate again: a record of maintenance by the manufacturer or a competent watchmaker, which for an older piece can matter as much as the original card.

None of this replaces inspection. Papers support a watch; they do not authenticate it on their own, and documentation can be incomplete for entirely legitimate reasons, a card mislaid over decades, a watch bought privately years ago. What matters is that everything is disclosed honestly and confirmed before a sale. When we describe a piece, completeness is reported as it is, not as we would wish it to be.
